The IBA conference is at the Marriott Wardman Hotel. It’s a perfectly nice conference hotel so that would be most convenient.
The next closest hotel is the Omni Shoreham which is walkable to the Wardman. Kate does generally not recommend the Omni (it’s huge and badly in need of renovation), but it would be most convenient.
The Marriott Wardman and Omni Shoreham are both close to the Woodley Park Metro Station (Red Line). Both hotels are north of the main DC downtown and mall areas (above Dupont Circle), so they are not walkable to DC tourist areas, except for the zoo. They are convenient to Dupont Circle and Adams Morgan which have nice dining options.
After these two hotels, it depends on what you’re looking for in terms of convenience, cost and luxury. If you want to stay close to the conference hotel, then there are a number of hotels in the Dupont Circle area. Kate would go with either the Normandy or the Washington Hilton (often referred to as the “Hinkley Hilton” as it was the scene of John Hinkley’s attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan), both are about ½-¾ mile away from the Wardman (a decent walk or short cab ride). Both are fine, neither is great (and the Hilton is yet another huge conference hotel).
To get a really good hotel, you have to go to downtown or Georgetown. The best luxury hotels in DC are the Hay Adams (across the street from Lafayette Park and the White House), the Jefferson and the Four Seasons (Georgetown).
There is also a good Mandarin Oriental. The Willard (part of the InterCon group) is also a nice hotel and well located near the Mall and other areas of interest. These would require you to take more cabs to and from the conference and around the city.
There are lots of options at different price ranges. A number of Kimptons, which are good, two Ritz Carltons, a Rosewood. If there is a particular hotel that has caught your eye, feel free to send Kate an email and she will tell you what there is to know about it and whether there would be convenient transportation to the conference hotel.
